Lifter Nurul Akmal Qualifies for the 2024 Olympics, Becomes Indonesia’s 10th Representative in Paris

JAKARTA – Good news comes from the world of Indonesian weightlifting. Indonesian female lifter, Nurul Akmal, managed to qualify for Paris 2024 Olympics .

This certainty was obtained after there was a reallocation of the quota in the 81 kg class in this four-yearly event. As a result, he succeeded in becoming Indonesia’s 10th representative at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“Friends, Indonesian female weightlifting athlete, Nurul Akmal, succeeded in ensuring that she became the 10th Indonesian athlete to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics after receiving a reallocation of the +81kg class quota. Congratulations @nurulakmal_12!” wrote a statement from the Ministry of Youth and Sports on its Instagram, @kemenpora, Thursday (11/4/2024).

Previously, Amel – Nurul Akmal’s nickname – had not been able to improve his total strength at the 2024 IWF World Cup, aka the 2024 World Weightlifting Championship in Phuket, Thailand, on Wednesday (10/4/2024) afternoon WIB. He only succeeded in one snatch with a weight of 107 kg and failed on three occasions in the clean and jerk.

That way, until the end of the qualifying process for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the best total lift will be 260 kg which was recorded at the 2022 IWF World Cup in Bogota, Colombia. He is still ranked 12th in the Olympic qualifying standings so his chances of qualifying for Paris 2024 are almost closed.

Luckily, there was a change in the quota allocation for the +81 kg class. This condition ensures that Amel will seal his ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Amel also became the third Indonesian lifter to qualify for Paris 2024. Previously, Eko Yuli and Rizki Juniansyah had already succeeded in securing their places at this year’s Olympics in the men’s 61 kg and 73 kg classes respectively.

Amel himself is Indonesia’s 10th representative at the 2024 Paris Olympics after nine representatives had previously qualified, including Eko Yuli and Rizki Juniansyah. They are Arif Dwi Pangestu (Archery), Diananda Choirunisa (Archery), Rifda Irfanaluthfi (Artistic Gymnastics), Fathur Gustafian (Shooting), Rahmad Adi Mulyono (Rock Climbing), Desak Made Rita (Rock Climbing) and Rio Waida (Surfing).
