Lierse K. started 2024 the way 2023 ended: with a disappointing defeat. This was the signal for the board to fire coach Jo Christians. He had been working at Lisp since the beginning of this season.
“Today our club said goodbye to Jo Christiaens. The management is now temporarily in the hands of assistant Geert Emmerechts. Together with the rest of the technical staff they will prepare the match against Deinze from today”, said the Pallieters two days after the bitter defeat against Dender.
The yellow-blacks are currently in twelfth place (out of 16 teams) in the Challenger Pro League, which is below expectations. Before the season there was talk of aiming for the top six, but now in Lier they can put these ambitions aside. The board wants to guarantee the turning point with the dismissal of the coach, but is not aiming only at Christiaens.

“First of all I would like to thank Jo for her efforts. Since his appointment he has been present at the club from early morning until late at night. The sporting results of recent weeks have forced us to make this decision. We don’t want to point the finger at Jo just for this. The players must also realize that things must be much better, everyone must look at themselves in the mirror,” says director of football affairs Dirk Gyselincxk on the Lierse K website.
Christiaens was making rapid progress as a coach. He ended his active playing career at THES Sport in 2020 and then found refuge as a coach at Turnhout. After two seasons at Binken, he went to work at Heist, where he was poached by the Pallieters after a solid season. He succeeded Tom Van Imschoot and began his first season as a professional coach, but this season is coming to an end.
