The local organization “Libya Crime Watch” (LCW) denounced a massive arrest campaign of demonstrators who protested in the square of the Al Sahada mosque last Monday against the management of Cyclone Daniel and called for the resignation of the authorities in the east of the country.
LWC expressed deep concern over “what appears to be a systematic campaign of repression launched by the military and security services in the city of Derna, in an attempt to intimidate protesters and silence their voices.”
This NGO that documents human rights violations claimed to have received reliable reports about arrests by the Internal Security Service and the imposition of restrictive measures such as isolating areas, limiting the work of journalists and cutting off communications and the Internet.
“We call on the authorities in eastern Libya to immediately end these violations, release those detained and respect the right to freedom of opinion, expression and peaceful demonstration,” LWC claimed in a statement.
At least 4,000 people have died and more than 10,000 are still missing due to the floods caused by Cyclone Daniel on September 10 in northeastern Libya, aggravated by the failure of a dam in Derna that left tens of thousands of people homeless.
Libya is divided into two centers of power, one in the west, based in Tripoli, and another in the east of the country, the area hardest hit by the cyclone, controlled by Marshal Khalifa Haftar. With EFE
