Liberecko: An accident at work deprived Martin (57) of both hands

Martin lived a fairly happy life, he had a family, a wife, Lenka, a little two-year-old daughter, and at that time he really wanted to become a police officer. “However, a work accident suddenly occurred and his life suddenly turned upside down. Both of his hands had to be amputated. His left arm was amputated above the elbow and his right arm was amputated at the wrist. The dream of becoming a police officer vanished. Back then, his wife was mainly his support,” the sister of Mr. Martin Dan describes.

It was not an easy period, but Martin did not give up and fought adversity as best he could. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in social work. He learned to drive a car with a prosthesis to be at least somewhat useful. “A few years after the accident, he started to devote himself to cycling, which still fulfills him today. In 2017, he participated in the Handy Cyklo Marathon. Cycling calms him down. They mainly drive around the place of residence, around Jizerka and Ještěd,” says Mrs. Dana.

A special prosthesis will help

His two daughters are now adults and Mr. Martin is also the grandfather of Kubík’s grandson. He tries to manage all activities with prostheses, but now he would very much like to get a special medical aid. After all, it would help him significantly and simplify some common tasks. The doctor recommended a hydraulic palm prosthesis from a Norwegian company. However, the device will cost about $3,400, plus applicable fees.

“This palm will provide Martin with wider possibilities of use, a safer grip, for example, holding the steering wheel while driving a car, holding the handlebars while riding a bicycle, and thanks to the technologies and materials used, it will enable him to perform more professional and demanding physical and manual activities.” describes Dana, who started a fundraiser for her brother on the charity platform Donio.

“I would like to thank you and Martin very, very much for the contributions you sent,” concludes Ms. Dana. “I laugh at you, Martin, and wish you a new hand,” one donor wrote him warm words. And you can help too.
