LG Electronics Group has just signed a cooperation agreement with Upstage, a Korean domestic AI company, to develop AI features for use on devices that do not require a network connection (AI on-device).
Accordingly, the two companies will work together to build an AI language model on the device and integrate leading small language modeling (SLM) technology on LG Gram laptop models.
“The two companies will develop AI features and additional services to integrate into LG Gram, bringing new, personalized experiences to everyday users,” the Korean company said. “For example, AI can recognize the owner’s commands and queries to make suggestions or summarize the content the user requests based on the data stored on the laptop.”
LG will bring “on-device” AI to its LG Gram laptop model.
As for Upstage, the company hopes to expand SLM Solar into “on-device” AI development for PCs and applications. SLM Solar is considered the ultimate solution for on-device AI as it can provide various AI functions without affecting inference speed and power consumption. According to the Hugging Face AI platform’s large language model ranking, Solar ranked first with a performance rating of 74.2 points.
AI “on-device” is a technology that allows AI features to be performed right on the device without needing an Internet connection. Processing information right on the device will help improve operating speed and save energy compared to cloud-connected AI services.
In addition, the technology also addresses concerns related to data privacy and serves users in areas with unstable Internet connections or in the event of network outages, thereby enabling AI experiences. takes place throughout.
The concept of “on-device” AI is gaining traction as AI services become increasingly important. Samsung recently launched the Galaxy S24 smartphone series equipped with these AI features. Meanwhile, Apple is also expected to bring “on-device” AI to the iPhone.
