Lecture “Transmodern primitivisms” by Colombian philosopher Santiago Castro-Gómez

Colombian philosopher Santiago Castro-Gómez will give a lecture in Chile entitled “Transmodern Primitivisms” in which he will explore the complex intersections between modernity and tradition with a critical view on how traditional ways of life can engage with the demands and challenges of the contemporary world.

Castro Gómez is currently one of the most important thinkers in Latin America due to his work, which has shaped a philosophical reflection in permanent dialogue with European political philosophy, passing through the first Frankfurt School, the political genealogy of Michel Foucault and contemporary political philosophy.

His work, which is characteristic of decolonial thought and political philosophy, includes Critique of Latin American Reason (1996), Postcoloniality Explained to Children (2005), The Fool and the Scoundrels: Notes for a Transmodern Republicanism (2019) and The Anthropological Rebellion. The Young Marx and the Hegelian Left (1835-1846) (2022), among others.

The conference is part of the launch of issue 37 of the Academy’s Journal, dedicated to the topic of “Research and critical thinking from Latin America.” Santiago Castro-Gómez’s participation will be complemented by his talk at the upcoming International Book Fair Democracy and Human Rights.
