Leader of Republicans activates story of extermination of communists

Ruth Hurtado, secretary general of the far-right organization, said: “I wish the Communist Party did not exist in Chile.” She recalled the doctrine of the dictatorship that outlawed the Communist Party and implemented repressive measures that left a trail of thousands of militants of that group murdered, disappeared, tortured, imprisoned and exiled. The representative of the far-right also accused the former communist convention member, Marco Barraza, of defending “violent people who went out to burn Chile,” in the repetition of a story from the times of the military regime and state terrorism. Barraza answered that “You cannot naturalize hate speech as violent as a party not existing”” and he remembered what “The denial of people is the most brutal thing that can exist, is contrary to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

“The Century”. Santiago. 15/7/2024. The Secretary General of the Republican Party, Ruth Hurtado, reactivated the narrative of the doctrine of the dictatorship and the extreme right of extermination of communists.

During his participation in the program “El primer café” on Radio Cooperativa, he pointed out that “I wish the Communist Party did not exist in Chile,” and recalled the doctrine of the dictatorship that outlawed the Communist Party and implemented repressive measures that left a trail of thousands of militants of that group murdered, disappeared, tortured, imprisoned and exiled. All with the support and even complicity of the right and the extreme right. Hurtado indicated, in that line, that the Communist Party represents an ideology “that harms everyone.”

La Republicana went further in her statements and accused the former PC convention member, Marcos Barraza, of defending violent activists. She said that the communists were “the only ones who have defended the violent activists who went out to burn Chile (in 2019), who honored them in Congress in Santiago” and she said: “In fact, it was Marcos Barraza and several of his friends who defended them” violent activists in the context of the social revolt of 2029.

The PR secretary general, returning to the language of the dictatorship, said that the communists and the left “romanticized violence and defended all these thugs who went out to burn Chile.”

In response, on the same Radio Cooperativa programme, Marcos Barraza pointed out that “you cannot naturalise hate speech as violent as the fact that a party does not exist” and emphasised that “the magnitude of verbal violence never ceases to surprise me”.

The former minister stated that “it is very dangerous when such violent hate speech is naturalized, because that is the basis for extreme violence such as that which the Republican Party has historically promoted in its most Pinochet-style version.”

Barraza said that “Chile, after those speeches, experienced an atrocious, violent dictatorship (so I cannot let Hurtado’s comment go by). It seems to me that it is tremendously violent and speaks of the perspective that the Republican Party has in terms of a very violent society.”a, very exclusive.”

Furthermore, the current leader of the PC stated that “the denial of people is the most brutal thing that can exist.”ris contrary to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

Meanwhile, communist deputy Matías Ramírez said on social media that “Ruth Hurtado’s statements are very dangerous in Chile, because her sector, the extreme right, has a history of persecuting, torturing and making communists disappear.” “And not only that – he said – by the way, killing women, pregnant women, children, workers and artists who were communist sympathizers.”

The legislator said that “we must be very careful with the ideology that she (Hurtado) represents, because as we see today all over the world, they represent horror.” He added that “this is so much the case that in Europe they have had to create a ‘health barrier’, that is, put a limit against the virus of fascism, to keep them out of the democratic system.”

Figures of terror and repression

During the civil-military dictatorship supported by the extreme right and the right, and which leaders of the Republican Party have claimed, around 500 Communist Party activists were killed or made to disappear.

In addition, thousands of communists were tortured, imprisoned and exiled.

There are well-known cases, such as the torture, execution and disappearance of members of the national leadership of the PC in 1976, the beheading of three communist professionals in 1985 and the torture and murder of the singer-songwriter Víctor Jara.
