The return matches of the quarterfinals of the Latvian basketball Užava Cup will take place at the end of the week. On Friday 19 January, at 7pm, the home team will host the “Rīgas Zeļī” team at the Valmiera Olympic Centre. Saturday 20 January, 4pm BK “Ventspils” – “University of Latvia”, Sunday 21 January, 5pm BK “Liepāja” – BK “Ogre”. The winners will be determined by the sum of two matches, all matches will be broadcast by TV4 and sportacentrs.com.
Friday at 7pm “VALMIERA GLASS VIA” – “Rīgas Zeļļi”
In the first match in Riga, the Valmierians won with 85:79 (20:19, 40:43, 66:61).
Almost the entire fight took place point by point, only when both teams managed to reach an 8-point lead (in the 24th minute Zelili was leading with 54:46, in the 31st minute the guests scored 61:69 ). In the last two minutes the Valmyers secured a small lead with a breakthrough of 9:2.
The top scorers were Dāvids Vīksne (29) and Edmunds Elksnis (25).
Valmieri had time to prepare for the return match for a week, on Wednesday “Rīgas Zeļļi” played in Tallinn.
The winners of this pair will play in the semi-finals with the best team of the pair BK “Liepāja” – BK “Ogre”.
Saturday at 16 BC “Ventspils” – “University of Latvia”
In the first match, Ventspils won 103:85 (28:24, 43:47, 73:62)
In Riga, the students kept the intrigue on the field and on the scoreboard until the 25th minute (56:56). Latvian vice-champions Ventspils dominated the rest.
Linards Jaunzems scored 21 points for the winners, Otto Fārenhorsts scored 19 points for “University of Latvia”.
The winners will play “VEF Rīga” in the semi-final.
Sunday at 5pm BK “Liepāja” – BK “Orco”
In the first match, “Liepāja” won with 96:74 (28:16, 46:38, 68:55).
The winners were better in the field goal battle (45-33) and shot more accurately: 2p. 25/39 – 20/47, 3 p. 23/9 – 20/5, 1p. 19/21 – 19/31. Kristaps Ćilps scored 21 points for Liepaja, Mats Juciks – 19 for Ogre.
Between the two quarterfinal matches, the teams faced each other in the Latvian-Estonian championship match Pafbet in Liepāja, and the Liepaja team also won convincingly (75:61).
22 points for the home team seems like a comfortable advantage, but in the history of the two matches of the Basketball World Cup one can find countless examples where such a difference was reproduced. Will the Ogre make it too?
The winners will play in the semi-finals against the winners of the “Rīgas Zeļļi” – “VALMIERA GLASS VIA” pair.
