Launch of the book “Writings of African Descent”

  • Bellarmino Room UAH Library, Avda. Bernardo 0’Higgins 1825, Metro Los Héroes.
  • Thursday, August 22 – 6:00 p.m.

“Writings of Afrodescendence” is a book that analyzes how women and men who identify as black and/or Afrodescendants have problematized their place in Latin American societies through their written productions.

The book explores the experience of racial discrimination, identity claims and social organisation among the themes it covers. These topics form a school of thought with its own specificities, which the book’s author, María Elena Oliva, explores with depth and academic rigour.

Oliva is a sociologist and PhD in Latin American Studies, with a career in the academic field: she has published more than forty texts including journal articles, book chapters and reviews. Her work focuses on Latin American critical thought, especially on Afro-descendant intellectuals and the history and culture of the Caribbean. In addition to her extensive academic production, the author has been a key figure in the founding of the Chilean Network of Afro-descendant Studies in 2019.

This book, which received an Honorable Mention in the Casa de las Américas Literary Award in 2023, will be presented at an event organized by Ediciones UAH in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Department of Anthropology of the Alberto Hurtado University on August 22 at 6:00 p.m.

The presentation will feature a panel of experts including Mónica García, PhD in Latin American Studies from UNAM, and Ricardo Amigo, PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Chile. The panel will be moderated by Enrique Antileo, academic and researcher from the Department of Anthropology at UAH.
