The work, which compiles the texts of 146 songs written by him, reflects a thematic range and a variety of poetic styles that range from traditional structures to more free-form versification formats.
In the words of the outstanding poet and payador, Hugo González Hernández, who wrote the prologue to the text: “In this book we speak of a comprehensive look at the body and soul of Chile. The diversity of these poems-songs skillfully addresses a wide range of themes: the homeland, loves, personal dreams and collective struggles, the simple and dignified people, nature in all its splendor. Nano Acevedo is a lyrical traveler of the territory, and through his work he invites us to experience with all our senses the essence of our land.”
Acevedo, winner of the National Music Award from the President of the Republic (2016), is the author of songs that are part of the history and the musical and poetic ideals of Chile. Among the most famous are “Oda a mi guitarra”, winner of the OTI Festival (1977), “Rin del amor”, “Ardo en el Clandestino”, and the songs “Yo vivo entre dos amores”, “Benaiga la suerte, Rosa”, “Ay de mí”, “Para cantarle al sol” and “Está naciendo una raza”, all finalists at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival.
In addition to his well-known musical heritage, his work in the trade union is also well-known. In fact, he is one of the founders of the Chilean Society of Copyright – SCD, now called the Chilean Society of Authors and Musical Performers. This social sensitivity, inherited in part from his precarious childhood on San Diego Street, can be seen in the themes he addresses in some of his compositions, where he expresses the experiences of a child who began working at the age of eleven taking care of cars in a neighborhood rich in expressions of popular culture.
“I always loved my old neighborhood of San Diego. I remember it as a poetic village, along with the characters from my childhood and the necessary dose of magic that they gave to my writing and my art…”, recalls Nano, who along with prominent national artists was also an important part of the “Tren Popular de la Cultura”, an initiative that supported Salvador Allende’s candidacy for the presidency (1971).
“I have seen generations of musicians, singers and composers pass by. I started with Roberto Inglés on Radio Portales, with Valentín Trujillo, then with René Largo Farías in the Peña ‘Chile Ríe y Canta’. I was in the cast with Silvia Urbina, Rolando Alarcón, Richard Rojas, Héctor Pavez. I learned from all of them, especially from Sofanor Tobar and Kiko Álvarez. My 60 years of songs and rebellions have been like a train ride, with stations of pain, abandonment, remorse, as well as happiness, joy and pride. I worked all my life, generally swimming upstream. I created spaces for artistic expression in times of dictatorship and repression. And I continue creating, I continue living,” says the singer-songwriter.
Along with the launch of the book “60 years of songs and rebellions”, a tribute concert will be held on the same day to the legendary “Peña Javiera” founded by Acevedo during the dictatorship.
“We opened in 1975 and it was packed. Don Roberto Parada, Magaly Rivano, Alejandro Cohen, Jorge Yáñez with Los Moros came, and I met Capri, a singer who sang Serrat songs and I realized that she could go well with my songs. We worked together for a while, we won the OTI festival in 1977… At the club we had a tremendous show, in which, in addition to the regular cast, there were Aquelarre, Margot Loyola, Gabriela Pizarro, Chamal, Pedro Yáñez, Roberto Parra and Catalina Rojas, Quipamán, Tradición, Alfredo Labbé, Mario Lanas”, the singer Ño Jacinto and so many names that I can’t remember. I invited Eduardo Peralta and he arrived at seventeen, he sang for a good while at the Javiera. Isabel Aldunate also grew a lot (…)”, the singer-songwriter recounts in his book “El niño de la calle San Diego” (2018).
At the book launch and concert, the following groups will present their poetic-musical greeting: Pedro Yanez, Julio Serey, Cecilia Astorga, Hugo Gonzalez Hernandez, Eduardo Peralta, Norma Medina, Francisco Villa, Maria Eugenia Zuniga, Raul Salinas, Marcela Moreira, Alejandro Masmar, Manuel Sanchez, Pachy Rojas, Berenice Ojeda, Esteban Escalona.
