Latino leaders from southern California have embarked on a caravan that aims to gather support as it travels to Florida, where they plan to stage a protest on July 1st, coinciding with the implementation of the anti-immigrant law SB 1718 in the state.

A Rallying Cry Against Anti-Immigrant Policies

Starting from Chicano Park in San Diego’s Logan Latino neighborhood, the caravan consists of at least a dozen vehicles and will tour cities with significant Latino and immigrant communities in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana before reaching Florida.

“This caravan is a powerful expression of our opposition to policies that seek to criminalize and strip away the fundamental rights of our immigrant communities,” said Pedro Ríos, director of the American Friends Services Committee border project, in an interview with EFE.

Ríos also warned about the dangers of SB 1718, stating that it “targets immigrants as potential victims of violence.”

Fears of an Exodus and the Impact of a Boycott

Estela Jiménez, a lawyer, expressed concerns that the announcement of the law’s enforcement could lead to an exodus of immigrant families to other states. She emphasized the impact on farm workers, whose rights are often overlooked.

In addition to the caravan, activists are simultaneously promoting a boycott of Florida products and tourism. The boycott was initiated by the same organizers in Chula Vista, San Diego County, a few weeks ago.

Jiménez acknowledged that the boycott’s impact is yet to be determined but suggested that it could gain significant traction in Latin America.

A Stand Against Political Exploitation

Gloria Saucedo, an activist leader in the region for over 30 years, highlighted the caravan’s objective of exposing politicians who exploit immigrant workers for their own political and electoral campaigns.

“We hope people will rise up, just as they did in California when they opposed the anti-immigrant Proposition 187. We want the community in Florida to achieve what we did here, ensuring that racist laws like SB 1718 do not go unchallenged,” Saucedo stated.

A Journey of Music and Resistance

Accompanying the caravan is composer Eduardo Parra, who has adapted songs to debut during the journey to Florida.

The caravan’s first stop will be Los Angeles, where a rally will be held, followed by a Sunday mass before continuing to Arizona.

The Controversial SB 1718

Florida Governor and Republican presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis signed SB 1718 into law on May 10th, claiming it was necessary “to combat the dangerous effects of illegal immigration caused by reckless border policies.”

The law criminalizes undocumented workers and requires employers in the state to verify worker documents and information online. It also prohibits the use of identification issued by other states, such as driver’s licenses.

Benjamín Prado from Unión del Barrio, speaking at the start of the caravan in San Diego, warned that DeSantis may have launched SB 1718 with the belief that the jobs lost in his state would be recovered. However, the law is already impacting Florida’s economy, leading even Republicans to voice opposition.
