Latin America reacts to the attempted coup in Bolivia

After denouncing “irregular troop movements,” the Bolivian government, headed by President Luis Arce, said that “a coup d’état” is underway.

“We denounce to the international community that there is a coup d’état against our democratically elected government in Bolivia,” wrote the vice president of the Andean country, David Choquehuanca, on his X account.

Following the official’s statement, various leaders and personalities spoke out to reject the events and implement actions to stop the possible rupture of the constitutional thread.

Celac
In her capacity as president of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), Honduran President Xiomara Castro called for an urgent meeting of the leaders of the bloc to “condemn the fascism that today threatens democracy in Bolivia and demand full respect for civil power and the Constitution.”

Castro said that “the military forces have once again carried out a criminal coup d’état” and expressed his “unconditional support for the brotherly people of Bolivia, for President Luis Arce and Evo Morales.”

Venezuela
For his part, the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, denounced “a coup d’état against Bolivian democracy.”

“At this moment, forces that have betrayed their oath of loyalty to the State have taken over the presidential palace in La Paz. That is the path that the fascists, the extremists want,” the Venezuelan leader said in a speech.

Maduro called “on the people of Bolivia to defend their democracy, their Constitution and their president, ‘Lucho’ Arce.”

Cuba
Likewise, the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parilla, “strongly” rejected the facts on behalf of his Government and expressed solidarity with Arce.

“Latin America and the Caribbean is a zone of peace,” the official stressed.

Subsequently, President Miguel Díaz-Canel described as outrageous “the attack on democracy and the Bolivian people shown in the images of international media this afternoon in Bolivia.”

“We repudiate the attempted coup d’état underway and extend the full solidarity of the Cuban government and people to brother Luis Arce,” he added.

Chile
From Chile, President Gabriel Boric expressed his “concern” about the events in La Paz and expressed his “support for democracy in the brother country and the legitimate government of Luis Arce.”

“We strongly condemn the unacceptable action of force by a sector of that country’s army. “We cannot tolerate any breach of the legitimate constitutional order in Bolivia or anywhere else,” he indicated.

Ecuador
In a brief statement, the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry regretted what happened in Bolivia and expressed its wishes for the prevalence of democracy “and respect for the established constitutional order.”

“We trust that there will be a peaceful solution to this situation, we reiterate our solidarity with the Bolivian people,” they added.

Paraguay
“Paraguay condemns the irregular mobilizations of the Bolivian army denounced by President Luis Arce. We make a strong call to respect democracy and the rule of law,” reads the message published on X by Paraguayan President Santiago Peña.

Peru
The Peruvian Government joined those who rejected the attempted coup d’état in Bolivia, an event that they called a “constitutional rupture.”

“Peru supports the people and the constitutional government of President Luis Arce and rejects any act that threatens the democratic and institutional order of that country,” reads part of the message released on X.

Similarly, Lima expressed “its support for institutional efforts to preserve order and the rule of law in the sister country of Bolivia.”

Other entities
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, condemned “in the most forceful manner” the actions of the Bolivian Army and stated that “it must immediately submit to civil authority, as mandated by the Inter-American Democratic Charter.”

“The international community, the OAS and the OAS General Secretariat will not tolerate any form of violation of the legitimate constitutional order in Bolivia or anywhere else,” Almagro said. Source: RT
