Kristof D’Haene is no longer an assistant at KV Kortrijk, the red lantern of the Jupiler Pro League has announced. D’Haene had been working as an assistant for just 3 months. “Now I choose my family, a difficult choice.”
Kristof D’Haene was a strong man at KV Kortrijk for many years. He was brought into the coaching staff by previous manager, Glen De Boeck, in October. At the start of the new year, D’Haene announced that he would be stepping down as assistant.
“A few weeks before New Year’s Eve I felt like I was missing the fire and passion,” explains D’Haene. “I don’t know why. My last game was in April and then for a year I didn’t want to do anything in football at all.”
“Then Glen De Boeck asked me to come back as assistant. I wanted to take that step so as not to have regrets later. But the fire and passion weren’t there.”
“I believe that every now and then you have to think about yourself. My family also suffers from it, after so many years of professional football. Now I make a difficult choice for my family.”
The 33-year-old D’Haene played 241 games for Kortrijk between 2015 and 2023. This summer he enjoyed a brief spell at SK Roeselare in the third amateur division, but hung up his boots in October. The defender had been suffering from hip problems for some time.
Glen De Boeck was fired by Kortrijk at the beginning of December. His successor became the Icelander Freyr Alexandersson. Kortrijk are sixteenth and last in the Jupiler Pro League, with 10 points after 20 games.
“I hope Kortrijk gets along with the new coach and assistant. There is a new atmosphere. I am the club’s first supporter.”
