It will be a good job for KV Kortrijk to survive in the Jupiler Pro League. The boys enter the winter break as Red Lanterns and have collected just ten points in 20 games. As a result, it now has five points less than its closest competitor, AS Eupen, and a deficit of as many as eleven points in secure twelfth place.
Kortrijk still has a lot to recover and for this they will have to score. With twelve goals scored, they have by far the worst attack in the Jupiler Pro League. It is therefore not surprising that the first winter signing became a striker.
KV Kortrijk becomes Ireland’s top scorer
Kortrijk welcomed the arrival of Jonathan Afolabi earlier this week. The 23-year-old was signed by Bohemians, where he had become the Irish league’s top scorer with fifteen goals. Kortrijk has given him a contract until 2026 in the hope that he will also score consistently in the Jupiler Pro League.
From Irish mirror he knows that Kortrijk has been trying to bring in Afolabi since November. The initial offer of 200,000 euros was rejected, but Bohemians eventually accepted a figure that would have been around 300,000 euros. Kortrijk thus managed to overcome the necessary competition.
Even more Belgian interest
English third division club Carlisle United was also reported to have made a bid and there was also interest from other Belgian clubs. However, it is not clear which clubs are involved.
For Afolabi himself, Kortrijk was an interesting option to stay in the limelight for the Irish national team. He made his first selection in September thanks to his good performances, but has not yet debuted. Now he can put himself under the spotlight of the new national coach at a higher level.
