WASHINGTON – US President Joe Biden hopes to “get back to campaigning next week,” reinforcing his commitment to stay in the race as a growing number of Democrats on Friday called on him to step down as the party’s nominee.

“The stakes are high and the choice is clear. Together, we will win,” he said.

His remarks appeared to be a response to conflicting reports that Biden’s inner circle was discussing the beleaguered president’s future and whether he should still run.

For weeks now, Biden has been caught in a political spiral of pressure to step down: calls from his own party leaders to drop out of the race, the loss of a major donor, and additional pressure that could hurt his decision. Democrats control Congress.

According to the BBC, at least dozens of Democratic lawmakers have called on Biden to step down on Friday alone, and Vice President Kamala Harris – who is considered the top choice to replace Biden – was tasked with comforting worried donors on a phone call on Friday afternoon.

Harris said she believed “in her heart of hearts” that “we are going to win this election”, a person listening to the conversation told the BBC. “We know which candidate in this election has the American people first: our President, Joe Biden,” she added.

Earlier in the day, Biden’s re-election campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon also sought to quash speculation that the president would drop out in an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “Of course, the president is in the race,” she said when asked about Biden’s plans.

In his statement, Trump referred to former President Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention in which he said he would continue to “expose the threat” posed by the former president while “strengthening his case” for the sake of his reputation.

“Donald Trump’s dark vision for the future is not who we are as Americans. Together, as a party and as a country, we can and will defeat him at the ballot box,” he said.
