The president of the republic, Nayib Bukele, confirmed on Friday night that excessive charges have been identified in electricity bills, which go beyond the increase in household consumption due to the hot season.
“We identified hundreds of receipts, both from AES El Salvador and DelSur, with charges that cannot be technically justified,” President Bukele said on social network X.
The president reported that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has initiated an investigation for aggravated fraud.
In this regard, the head of the General Directorate of Energy, Hydrocarbons and Mines (DGEHM), Daniel Álvarez, supported President Bukele and assured that no one is going to abuse Salvadorans. «Today we have a president and a Government that are looking out for the Salvadorans. For our part, we will provide technical support and review each case of abuse that has been committed by the distributors against the homes of Salvadorans,” he indicated.
For its part, AES El Salvador reported that it is at the “complete disposal of the authorities to provide them with all the information they may require and collaborate as necessary to clarify any concerns about the invoices issued to consumers.”
They also highlighted that the distribution companies have applied, since April 15, to the customers’ bills, the energy rate defined and approved by the competent authorities for this period.
«Each customer sees the approved rate reflected on their electricity bill multiplied by their monthly energy consumption recorded in kWh on their meter. Therefore, it is essential that consumers make conscious and responsible use of energy to keep their consumption under control,” they detailed.
Likewise, DELSUR indicated that the “company is in the best position to collaborate with the investigation and provide all the information that is necessary.”
For his part, analyst and lawyer Juan Contreras said in the interview Las Cosas como Son that President Bukele’s announcement is timely given the complaints that have been made public, since some users claim that they have recorded charges 10 times higher than those they reported. They paid a few months ago.
«I think the president is punctual in saying that the investigation is being carried out by the Prosecutor’s Office. It is the body that is going to do it and these measures are going to begin to impact the population’s pockets,” he said.
