Dressed in a black leather jacket, Kim Jong Un oversaw the military exercises and greeted North Korean soldiers in camouflage clothing, footage broadcast on state television showed. Later, the leader “climbed onto a new type of battle tank, grabbed the control lever and controlled the tank himself,” KCNA described.

Kim Jong Un reportedly said he was very pleased with the tank’s “excellent striking power.” He also emphasized “the importance of the role of tankers in modern warfare,” and urged the “need to organize advanced exercises that simulate real war,” it added.

The North Korean drills took place on the last day of the annual spring exercises between the US and South Korea, which aim to better prepare for nuclear threats from Pyongyang. Nuclear-armed North Korea has long condemned these exercises as rehearsals for an invasion of its territory.
