Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 60 percent of PTI’s new provincial candidates elected for the first time

As a result of the general elections held on February 8 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 60 percent of the new candidates for the Provincial Assembly and 30 percent of the National Assembly supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have won according to the inconclusive results.

Out of 87 successful candidates of PTI in the provincial assembly, 64 candidates are new candidates, who will go to the assembly for the first time.

Similarly, out of the 37 PIT National Assembly candidates in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 11 are new candidates who will go to the Assembly for the first time, while the rest of the candidates have either been members of the National or Provincial Assembly in the 2018 or 2013 general elections.

In terms of overall provincial and national assembly, PTI had issued tickets to about 50 percent new candidates, but later as per the court decision, all the candidates contested the elections as independents.

If we talk at the district level, five of the eight candidates who won the PTI-backed provincial assembly in Swat are new candidates.

Political analysts and observers consider this trend as a positive indicator in Pakistani politics because according to them some political parties give tickets to electables i.e. people who have participated in elections repeatedly and new people are not given a chance.

Adil Shahzeb is the host of ‘Dawn News’, a current affairs program and keeps an eye on political affairs.

He told Independent Urdu that it is a happy future that this time also PTI not only gave tickets to new faces but those people are now going to be a part of the parliament.

An example of this is Meena Khan Afridi of the PTI Youth Wing from Peshawar, a middle-class activist who will now be part of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Adil said.

He said: “One may or may not agree with Tehreek-i-Insaaf’s style of politics, but it is a fact that to attract young voters or to bring young and new faces to the assembly by giving preference to electables, they have to do this.” I have priority over other major parties.’

Farzana Ali is the bureau chief of ‘Aaj News’ in Peshawar and she also thinks that it is great to have new faces in the Assembly but now these new people have to work.

Talking to Independent Urdu, he said that in order to change the system, apart from the electables, new faces have to come forward and PTI has done this and it is very welcome to have women in it.

According to Farzana: “There is a large number of young people among the new faces, but now these young people have to look at their elders and leave their sentimentality and move forward to solve the problems of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.”

On the question whether due to the cases of old candidates, PTI gave tickets to new people under compulsion? Farzana replied: ‘It could be forced because everyone was in trouble, but when Imran Khan was in Zaman Park, he always considered the youth as his strength.’
