For Indian actress Khushali Kumar, Starfish was a passion project for which she put everything on the line physically, mentally and emotionally.
The preparation and shooting was so intense that it exhausted them. Speaking to Sayeda Abba Fatima of Hindustan Times, the actress told how at one point she started questioning her decision to act in the film.
The actress said, ‘It was so cold that everyone was wearing jackets while I was ready to jump into the water in a dress. It was very difficult and challenging. There was a point during the shooting of the underwater scenes, when I came out of the water and said ‘What kind of script did I choose’ (laughs). I was relieved when the shooting was over.’
The actress recently opened up about the trauma she faced after shooting the climactic scene where her character takes a heavy dose of drugs. In fact, not only the shooting, but also the preparation of the scene was difficult.
He said that there is a one-minute cut in the film in which he actually performed for four minutes straight because the scene gripped him so much. It took him a lot of time to prepare for this scene and even after shooting he took a certain amount of time to get out of the zone.
But he soon added that working on the project also gave him the most joy. He said, ‘The next moment I was happy because after every shoot everyone on the set was clapping and that was another thing of encouragement. In fact, I miss those shooting days now, no matter how tough they were.’
Khushali also talked about how she got so engrossed in the role of Tara (her name in the film) that it became difficult to get out. ‘I became (Tara) and it was kind of scary. But I believe many actors face this problem.
‘When you play a certain role, you get stuck in that zone. But it’s about how strong you are to train your mind, detach yourself and come out of it. It takes time and that’s okay. This is an actor’s journey.’
He is thankful that the team finally shot the most intense scenes of the film. ‘Cause after that I used to get really scared and wake up in the middle of the night. I would start crying and panic without knowing what was happening to me. It was so much in that zone that it affected me to the core.’

Khushali took a break after shooting to come out of her role. ‘I traveled to different cities, read different things, tried to engage in different activities to distract my thoughts. I could not leave myself in this state for too long. It was a process that I went through and now I have come out of it.’
Although she has raised the standard of acting not only for others but also for herself with this role, will she avoid playing such a challenging role in the future? He said that every role is challenging in its own way. It’s not easy to be someone else and be true to it and make it seem real.
