The cyclist of the Kazakh team Astana Qazaqstan Team Mark Cavendish became the winner of the fifth stage of the multi-day race “Tour de France”, Liter.kz reports with reference to Olympic.kz.
“Cavendish demonstrated brilliant form, covering the 177.4-kilometer route from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbe in 4 hours, 8 minutes and 46 seconds. The victory on this stage allowed Cavendish to set a new record for the number of Tour de France stage wins. This triumph was his 35th, which allowed him to surpass the previous record set by the legendary Eddy Merckx, who won 34 stages,” the NOC of the Republic of Kazakhstan noted.
Second place went to Jasper Philipsen of Team Alpecin-Deceuninck, and third place went to Alexander Christoff of Team Uno-X.
Mark Cavendish, renowned as one of the greatest sprinters in cycling history, expressed his gratitude to the team and fans for their support.
“It was an incredible day. I am grateful to my team for their efforts and support, without which this victory would not have been possible. To beat Eddy Merckx’s record is something special for me,” Cavendish said after the race.
The captain of the Astana Qazaqstan Team also noted that this success will inspire him to new achievements in the current season.
Stage 5 of the 2024 Tour de France will be remembered as the moment Mark Cavendish wrote his name into cycling history by becoming the most successful rider in the history of the stage race by number of stage wins.
