“The whole time that Karel was suffering for months, the family was frantically looking for a solution. The medication didn’t help,” one of the actors revealed to Bleska. “Finally, the gamma knife was also used, which is more often associated with cancer treatment. But it is also used in cases like his. It is said that he was supposed to go to him already this week.” added Heřmánk’s friend sadly.

For his colleagues, it is a big question mark why the actor, who was severely tested by fate, did not wait for the help that was offered to him… Apparently, unfortunately, after long months of severe pain, he ran out of strength and said enough.

A miracle helper

Leksell’s gamma knife has been helping patients in Prague’s Na Homolce Hospital for 32 years. It was commissioned in 1992 and cost an unimaginable 100 million crowns at the time! Literally the whole of Czechoslovakia was devoted to him, in a euphoric national collection called Konto Míša. It was named after the then 12-year-old Michal Budínský from Slovakia, whose life was saved in Stockholm with a gamma knife, and the Czechs correctly sensed that it would be nice to have such a device available as well. And so, while Michal lived to be 40 years old (he passed away in 2018), the gamma knife (the second one) on Homolka helps about a thousand sick people every year!

How they can help from suffering

1) Irradiation of the root of the trigeminal nerve using a gamma knife. In a large percentage of cases, it leads to a reduction of pain up to complete relief, which usually occurs a week to two months after the procedure.

2) Percutaneous balloon compression, i.e. the introduction of a catheter into the trigeminal nerve ganglion, where a balloon at the end of the catheter is inflated. Pain relief can also be achieved with this technique. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, the patient leaves the same day.
