Kamala Harris, the option to be the new presidential candidate

After Joe Biden drops out of the presidential race, could Kamala Harris be his successor?

It was just a couple of minutes ago when, through a press release, the current president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced his withdrawal as a candidate for the presidency, so everything indicates that the vice president in office, Kamal Harris, could be the best option to be the next candidate of the Democratic Party.

But who is Kamala Harris?

Kamala D. Harris was born in Oakland, California, in 1964 to parents who emigrated from India and Jamaica. She graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Her parents were activists and instilled in her a strong sense of justice. They took her to civil rights demonstrations and introduced her to role models – from Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to civil rights leader Constance Baker Motley, whose work motivated her to become a prosecutor.

In 2017, after an already solid career in the U.S. government, Harris was sworn into the U.S. Senate. In her first speech, she spoke out in support of immigrants and refugees, who at the time were under attack. As a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, she fought for better protections for DREAMers and called for better oversight of substandard conditions in immigration detention centers.

As a senator, she also led legislation to reform cash bail, combat hunger, provide rental assistance, improve maternal and child health care, and address the climate crisis as a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

By 2020, Kamala accepted President Joe Biden’s invitation to become vice president, becoming the first woman, the first African American, and the first South Asian American to be elected vice president.

Kamala Harris, Biden’s choice for presidential nomination

After withdrawing from the race, President Joe Biden, 81, announced his support for Kamala Harris to be his predecessor in the presidential race, saying she is the best option for Democrats.

“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats: it’s time to unite and defeat Trump. Let’s do it,” he wrote through his X account.

He also said that choosing Harris as his vice president was “the best decision he ever made.”

It is worth noting that, after Biden’s ‘showy’ performance during the presidential debate against Republican Donald Trump, Kamala quickly became a viable option for the Democratic Party, in case it became necessary to replace the president on the ticket.
