Thank you for watching the online broadcast of Joe Biden’s keynote announcement towards the November elections in the USA, we will bring more news in the USA as part of the regular coverage on Blesk.cz. Finally, we present an overview of the latest events:
- The campaign for the November presidential election of the United States is going through an unprecedented upheaval. Joe Biden, under pressure from his colleagues from the Democratic Party, gave up his candidacy less than four months before the election and supported his vice president, Kamala Harris, in the fight for the White House.
- Harris is now close to the presidential nomination, within hours, Democrats from across the US were behind her, including some politicians who were themselves listed as potential candidates – including Governor Gavin Newsom of California, who was seen as a potential contender for the White House.
- Biden’s announcement came 107 days before the Nov. 5 presidential election. The AP noted that it has never happened in the US before that a presumptive candidate of one of the two major political parties withdrew from the campaign at such a late stage.
- The influential former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, also joined in supporting Harris today and six Democratic governors, including JB Pritzker and Gretchen Whitmer, most of whom are considered vice-presidential candidates and have previously been discussed as possible successors to Biden.
- It is another twist in a whirlwind campaign marked by court cases against Republican candidate Donald Trump, as well as the assassination of the 78-year-old politician.
- Biden, who at 81 is the oldest president in US history, faced unprecedented voter doubts about his fitness for office. Those doubts grew into panic within the Democratic Party after Biden’s shaky performance in a televised debate with Trump in June. In the end, the president gave up the fight for re-election under the weight of unfavorable polls and appeals from party colleagues or sponsors.
- Delegates from individual states will decide on the democratic nomination for president at the latest at the party’s pre-election convention, which will be held from August 19 to 22. Delegations from at least three states have already announced they will vote for Harris.
- At the same time, the vice president took control of the finances originally intended for a joint campaign with Biden, as well as over an election campaign employing hundreds of workers across the US. In recent weeks, the president’s team has had problems raising money for the campaign, however, after Biden’s resignation, the Democrats experienced the best day of the current election cycle in this regard, said the party’s main platform for selecting contributions. The ActBlue organization announced that donors have recently sent almost 50 million dollars (over 1.1 billion CZK).
- Many commentators have pointed out that the turn in Trump’s campaign complicates the situation, because until now the ex-president has largely relied on Biden’s alleged incompetence. Trump is now the oldest candidate to be nominated for president, and if Harris is the Democratic nominee, she will be an opponent nearly 20 years younger.
In response, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his wish for the US presidential election to be “as civilized as possible” following Biden’s withdrawal from the campaign. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz considers Harris an experienced politician, but according to him, the Democrats have to decide for themselves whether to put her up against Trump in the November presidential elections.
On the contrary, the Kremlin refused to evaluate the potential candidacy of Harris in the autumn elections, saying that she has not been very active in the field of Russian-American relations so far, except for some statements that, according to Moscow, were not very friendly.
