Just push a wireless button – “HyperX Alloy Origins 65”

The first product I tried from the HP HyperX gaming brand was a pair of headphones that I really liked.

introduction

I have now received the “HyperX Alloy Origins 65% Mechanical Gaming Keyboard” on the test bench and have spent several weeks finding out whether the product satisfies gamers who want fast, responsive gaming in a sturdy, space-saving design.

Specifications (approximately NOK 1,600)

  • 65% functionally compact form factor.
  • Aircraft quality aluminum cover
  • 1000 Hz polling rate
  • Premium double-shot PBT keys
  • HyperX mechanical switches
  • RGB backlit keys: five light levels
  • USB C connection
  • 820 g with cable

Design and software

Built like a tank, this keyboard definitely is, and HyperX points out that they use materials from airplanes! Oh. This can be said. I can’t guarantee this, but it must be true, because the bottom part is so sturdy that I will hardly be able to destroy it with a sledgehammer. Ok, maybe after 20 tries, but you get the point. Durable aluminum not only covers the bottom, but also grips the sides. This further increases the feeling of quality and you can appreciate in many ways the price, which is in the middle range. If it is a little cold in the room, you will feel the cold metal. I kind of like it.

What you don’t get is a wireless connection, so a USB C cable is needed here. For logical reasons it’s not as important to me to have a wireless keyboard as a wireless mouse, but I understand those of you who want both wireless. I wouldn’t have refused.

You can’t avoid the stock RGB lighting, but you can of course disable and change the “light show” in Ngenuity, HyperX’s software for gaming gear. The program does what you expect, but there is a little trick with some keys: you can decide for yourself what the function keys (“fn”) should do:

You won’t find a volume wheel, but you can easily control the volume with the fn button and volume keys as you see in the image.

Features and performance

The fact that they don’t have a 2.4GHz wireless connection is one thing, a bigger problem is that you can’t control the sensitivity of the keys. I wish the keys were a little faster. It’s not much, but enough to be annoying. The keyboard is similar to other 65% form factors on the market, but unlike the Steelseries Apex Pro Mini Wireless, which I tested in summer 2022, it doesn’t have the ability to set how long the keys take to react — or else . if you prefer to press the keys further before something happens.

That said, the Steelseries keyboard, which is also wireless, is much more expensive: NOK 3,000. However, it’s smart to be aware that you can’t set this and test the keyboard before taking action if you’re sensitive to this. On the other hand, Steelseries has a plastic back.

BILDEPlus for HyperX for two lifting options, like the one in Steelseries, but has one advantage that the compact Steelseries keyboard lacks: arrow keys. Thanks, HyperX.

Conclusion

As software goes, HyperX’s latest headset and keyboard “works,” but where the headset doesn’t have Bluetooth beyond the 2.4GHz present, the keyboard isn’t wireless and doesn’t have the advanced ability to set key sensitivity. You can tell from the price, but I would have preferred the keys to be a little more sensitive.

Plus, simple, straightforward software and a really sturdy keyboard that will likely last for many years.

Let’s conclude

I like the attention that HyperX shows, now also with its keyboard, with a very robust design and efficient software. I wish the keys were a little faster and keep in mind that it is not wireless.
