In a significant gesture that highlights the importance of judicial independence and the defense of social rights, the Pan American Committee of Judges for Social Rights and Franciscan Doctrine, under the protection of Pope Francis, has come out in defense of Judge Daniel Urrutia Laubreaux. This judge, a prominent member of the committee and member of its Board of Directors, has been the subject of a harassment campaign led by the UDI and conservative sectors after a controversial judicial decision related to video calls from inmates at the Santiago High Security Prison.

In a letter addressed to President Gabriel Boric, the Committee expressed its concern about the situation faced by Judge Urrutia. Beyond any evaluation of the judicial measures in question, the Committee underlined the importance of preserving judicial independence and the dignity of judges in the exercise of their functions. It was highlighted that personal threats, public ridicule and media persecution are not adequate mechanisms for the proper functioning of republican institutions.

The Pan American Committee of Judges for Social Rights and Franciscan Doctrine reiterated its commitment to the protection and promotion of social rights from the judiciary. In this sense, he emphasized that the independence of the Judiciary and its autonomy are fundamental to guarantee the rule of law and respect for the fundamental rights of all people.

The letter sent to President Boric concluded with a call to avoid the continuation of situations such as the one faced by Judge Urrutia. The President was urged to do everything within his power to guarantee respect for judicial independence and the protection of the dignity of judges in the exercise of their functions.
