One after another, Mlakar and then Sesko tested Rajkovic’s skills. In the 37th minute, Elsnik shook his body, passed the red shirt defender, and shot a left-handed shot that hit the post of Serbia’s goal. On the ensuing kickoff, Sesko sent the ball over the bar. This can be considered the best opportunity for both teams in the first 45 minutes of play.
Karnicnik scored the only goal, helping Slovenia win 1-0.
Entering the second half, Serbia suddenly rose up and launched a massive attack. Serbia’s pace of play left the Slovenian defense reeling for about 10 minutes.
Right when Serbian fans hoped for the home team’s improvement, Slovenia scored. In the 69th minute, Karnicnik stole the ball in the middle of the field, opening a quick counterattack for Slovenia. It was he who perfectly finished off Elsnik’s assist, opening the score.
At this point, the Serbian team has nothing to lose. They replaced people, adding more personnel to the attack front. But bad luck followed, causing the ball from Mitrovic’s shot to fly right onto the crossbar in the 71st minute. Then the red shirt team’s shots kept trying to “dodge” from Slovenia’s goal. We must also mention captain Oblak, who shielded and blocked Serbia’s late-game aerial options.
It’s a pity for Oblak that he and his teammates could not win all 3 points. Jovic, with a dangerous header, subdued the Slovenian defense in the 90+5 minute.
Slovenia has 2 points, Serbia has only 1 point after 2 matches. The opportunity to enter the 1/8 round of EURO 2024 is still intact for both teams.
