COSMOPOLITE SCENE/AKERSGATA (Nettavisen): Comedians are often idolized and admired, but the reality is not always as rosy as it might seem from the outside.

Last year, several comedians and other celebrities who make a living doing entertainment announced they had to take a break because they were burned out.

Jonis Josef (31), Stian Blipp (33), Martha Leivestad (30) and Henrik Thodesen (43) are all examples of celebrities who, over the last year, have found themselves having to hold back after their bodies said to no.

– It’s difficult

– No no no! I can’t stand questions about burnout!

It’s clear that the topic is painful for Jonis Josef when Nettavisen asks him why he thinks so many comedians have been burned out recently.

– It’s difficult. It’s hard, hard, hard. We do much more than just “normal work”. We are not just actors or artists; we are presenters, comedians, theater artists and copywriters. And those who end up in the best positions are the ones who have to work the hardest, Josef tells Nettavisen.

In 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognized burnout as a disease, while Norwegian Health Informatics (NHI) classifies it as an occupational phenomenon.

Presenter and comedian Stian Blipp has been open about struggling with burnout in the past and explains why it affects so many people in the entertainment industry.

– I think it’s because in the past you were just a comedian on stage – you went on stage and then you were done. But if you are a comedian today, you have to be funny always and everywhere. There are also huge opportunities, so there’s not a huge ceiling on how much you can work. You can work as much as you want, Blipp tells Nettavisen.

Say yes too much

Like Blipp and Josef, Martha Leivestad had to retire due to burnout.

She speculates that the underlying cause is an excessively high workload and believes more people in the industry could benefit from becoming better at rejecting offers.

– I think so! I think we’re a little too good at saying yes. Then in the end you get burned, Leivestad tells Nettavisen.

– There’s probably even more stress than you think, but for us it’s no more stressful than for a nurse working 12-hour shifts. So in all professions you can encounter a wall.

Podcast couple Sigrid Bonde Tusvik and Lisa Tønne share the view and don’t think it’s at all difficult to work as an entertainer.

– No, I don’t think so at all, says Bonde Tusvik.

– And now, after MeToo, it’s all a dance of roses! It used to be very tiring to have to try to find a way out of situations all the time, but you don’t need that anymore, adds Tønne.
