US President Joe Biden condemned the attack on Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, saying he was glad the Republican presidential hopeful was “okay” after being successfully evacuated.
“I am glad to hear that he is safe and doing well. I am praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally,” the president said in a statement.
“There is no place for this kind of violence in America. We must come together as one nation to condemn it,” added the Democrat, who thanked the Secret Service for having brought the Republican to safety.
The White House also announced that the president plans to address the nation shortly.
Trump was holding a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when he had to be evacuated from the podium following an attack.
The Republican candidate had been in office for just ten minutes when he was apparently hit by a bullet in the right ear and was evacuated by the Secret Service with blood on his right cheek.
Trump’s spokesman, Steven Cheung, said in a statement that Trump “is doing well and is being treated at a local medical facility.”
Two people were killed in the shooting, including the suspected shooter, according to sources from the Butler County District Attorney’s Office cited by local media.
