The President Javier Miley He will travel to New York on Saturday to address the United Nations General Assembly for the first time. He will be accompanied by the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo; the chancellor, Diana Mondinoand the general secretary, Karina Milei.
No formal contacts with the White House or the IMF are expected. In fact, the host country is organizing a cocktail party for Monday afternoon, after the speeches by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and the president Joe Bidenbut Milei has not yet confirmed whether he will go. “It will be an institutional visit to the UN,” said those close to the head of state.
The President will give a critical message about the role of international organizations vis-à-vis States. In particular, against initiatives such as Agenda 2030, which is especially questioned by the Government. The president does not believe in the objectives framed in this program, which include the promotion of gender equality and the fight against climate change. On the other hand, he believes that the interventions of multilateral organizations should be limited, as much as possible, to credit relations. In any case, he would balance this position with a direct allusion to the “subjugation” that China supposedly exerts on the organization, a passage that would represent a nod to the interests of the United States in Latin America, according to Infobae in a special report from that country.
In the US power centre they do not agree with Milei’s view on the 2030 Agenda (an initiative they promoted since 2015 and still defend). However, they relativise the impact of differences on environmental or social issues on the bilateral relationship. What matters to them, ultimately, is that democracy remains firm, in the face of chaos in Venezuela; that the relationship with China does not deepen – more than the military presence, they are concerned about the commercial and financial ones; and having guaranteed access to natural resources, especially critical minerals (“lithium” and “copper” are words often repeated in the American decision-making commands).
Thus, they follow the details of the measures and know in real time how the votes in Congress turn out on issues related to the economy – for example, the recomposition of pensions and its subsequent veto, or the fine print of the Budget. In contact with the economic team, with whom they have a fluid relationship, they perceive the obvious difficulties in obtaining political support, but they consider them understandable for the force of an “outsider” and they downplay their consequences. They recognize the drop in inflation and the fulfillment of fiscal goals, but they have doubts about the date for the end of the restrictions, about the supposed plan to dollarize the economy, and about the roadmap for next year. In short, they doubt the sustainability of the plan.
Although they are busy, they are not “concerned” by the details. What interests them most is the direction of the economic recipe, in the broadest sense. For now, they proclaim clear support, but demand greater clarity in the future. The Government responds with a broad concept: “Our plan for the future is to make Argentina freer, growth and sustainability will come from there.”
