Jasmine is the first woman to complete the 100-mile Barclay Marathon

British ultrarunner Jasmine Parris became the first woman to complete the 100-mile Barclays Marathon on Friday.

According to Reuters, he completed the world’s toughest ultramarathon in 59 hours, 58 minutes and 21 seconds, a few seconds before the scheduled 60 hours.

Jasmine Parris was one of five ultrarunners to complete the annual race held at Frozenhead State Park in the US state of Tennessee. No one has won more than half of the races here in its nearly four-decade history.

Jasmine, who was born in Hadfield, Derbyshire, also took part in the race in 2022 but did not finish in the allotted time.

Last year, Jasmine became the first woman to climb the fourth loop since 2001.

Jasmine Park, 40, is a veterinary scientist and mother of two in Edinburgh. He previously broke the course record for the Mountain Spine Race in northern England in 2019 by 12 hours.

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the route in Frozen Head State Park changes every year, but its distance is 100 miles, including 60,000 feet of ascent and descent, which is twice the height of Mount Everest. There is a fold.

Since its expansion to 100 miles in 1989, only 20 people have finished the race within the allotted 60 hours.

This year’s winner, Jasmin Paris, often had to traverse very difficult routes and had to run through the night to complete the race.

David Miller, a professional photographer involved in the race, told BBC Scotland that he had seen ‘the greatest ultramarathon success ever’.

He said: ‘There was a lot of excitement at the finish line and three minutes before the 60-hour cut-off we heard screams and people cheering Jasmine Paris on.

‘She was running and putting all her might because there was no room for error or she wouldn’t make the cut-off. She touched the gate and collapsed from exhaustion. It was the best thing I’ve ever seen, it was incredible.’

David Miller added: ‘Even though I was focused on Jasmine and recording this historic moment, I could also feel the tears because it was such an emotional moment.’

Strange Race Traditions

This race is not only physically tough but also known for its strange traditions.

Its route changes each year but consists of five loops of approximately 20 miles, with only 35 participants allowed to participate each year.

The Barclay Course is the brainchild of Gary ‘Lazarus Lake’ Cantrell and Carl Hein.

The idea for the race came when he heard about the 1977 escape of James Earl Ray, the assassin of Martin Luther King Jr., from the nearby Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary.

James Earl Ray covered just 12 miles (19 km) after running for more than 50 hours through the woods during the day, hiding from aerial searches.

Cantrell is reported to have joked about the distance covered by James Earl Ray, saying: ‘I could have gone at least 100 miles.’

Prospective runners pay an entry fee of $1.60 (£1.27) to write an essay on ‘Why should I be allowed to run at Barclays’ and receive a letter of condolence if successful.

Race participants are also required to bring an additional ‘fee’, which in the past has included a donation of items such as a white shirt, socks or car registration plate in case of not reaching the end of the race.

Competitors must find between nine and 14 (the exact number varies each year) books along the route and tear out the page with their race number from each book as proof of completion.

At the end of each lap the participants take them to the race creator and director Mr. Cantrell, commonly known as ‘Laws’.

They wait at the yellow gate made famous by the 2014 documentary Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young.

Races start anytime from midnight to noon. It officially starts when the race director lights a cigarette.

The route is unmarked and participants have to memorize the route in advance.

The first and third loops are in clockwise direction while the second and fourth loops are in anticlockwise direction. Whoever finishes the fourth loop first determines which direction to go on the last loop.
