Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, convicted last week of attempted coup d’état in Brazil, was diagnosed with “early” skin cancer, his doctor announced this Wednesday. Bolsonaro, 70, has “squamous cell carcinoma, which is neither the most benign nor the most aggressive, it is intermediate, but it is still a type of skin cancer that can have more serious consequences,” Dr. Claudio Birolini told reporters.
Sentenced to 27 years in prison
Last week, the First Chamber of the Supreme Court sentenced Bolsonaro and seven of his former ministers and former military leaders to sentences of between 16 and 27 years in prison for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 elections against the current ruler, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro was not present in the last sessions of the trial due, according to his lawyers, to health problems.
In a bulletin, the DF Star hospital said that Bolsonaro arrived at the center “dehydrated, with an elevated heart rate and a drop in blood pressure.” “The examinations showed persistence of anemia and alteration of kidney function,” he added. The cancer diagnosis, however, had to do with some tests that were performed last Sunday. “Of the seven lesions analyzed, two tested positive for carcinoma,” said Birolini. In recent months, the former president has reported frequent discomfort, especially chronic hiccups and vomiting. Some of these health problems are derived from the knife attack in the abdomen that he suffered during the 2018 election campaign.
