In addition to Australian brothers Callum and Jake Robinson, an American was murdered in Ensenada, Baja California, in what Mexican authorities presume was a robbery gone wrong. The American was identified as Jack Carter Rhoad, a friend of Callum.
The three traveled to Baja California to surf, after attending the Coachella festival in the United States. Carter was a friend of Callum and worked at a technology services company.
According to US media, Carter, 30, had worked at that company since December 2019.
He also founded his own clothing company, Loma Apparel.
Like Callum, Carter was a sports fan. He even played in professional soccer, for Deportivo Mixto in Guatemala’s first division national league.
However, those who knew him highlight his humanitarian work. He traveled as a volunteer to South Africa, Guatemala and Mexico.
A friend of Carter’s family, Lee Penland, started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the expenses generated by the tragedy. “We have created this GoFundMe to support the Rhoad family during this unimaginably difficult time and provide essentials like housing, food, transportation, and more. No donation is too small, and every contribution is deeply appreciated.”
Penland said there is a feeling of devastation following the murder of the three victims, whose presence, he noted, “brought immeasurable joy, love and kindness to those around them, leaving a mark on our lives.”
As of this Monday, the campaign has raised 53,690 dollars, almost 907 thousand Mexican pesos.
The surfers were reported missing on April 27. Their bodies were recovered Friday afternoon in a cliff well. The authorities indicated that the three were victims of robbery; that the criminals wanted to steal the tires of their truck and that when the young people resisted, they murdered them.
