Izmir Science High School Student Received an Award for the Guitar Model He Developed with Artificial Intelligence

Izmir Science High School 12th grade student Burak Sina Akbudak returned with an award from the science and engineering competition in the USA with the artificial intelligence model he developed that can produce works for classical guitar.

Akbudak, who has been interested in music since his childhood, has been playing classical guitar for about 9 years.

Akbudak, who started searching for the melodic and harmonic structures he was stuck on in guitar compositions, prepared a project last year, thinking that he could solve this problem through artificial intelligence systems, which have become very popular recently.

With the support of his instructors, Akbudak created an artificial intelligence model that can produce new pieces without any input or produce new pieces by following the notes given as initial input, preserving the melodic and harmonic structure.

Unlike other artificial intelligence applications that can make songs and compositions, the model in question can produce musically stronger and faster works when working specifically with classical guitar.

The app also calculates how playable the track is on guitar.

Burak Sina Akbudak, with his “Musically Rich Classical Guitar Pieces Project Created with Artificial Intelligence”, succeeded in coming second in the “Art Production with Technology” category of the International Regeneron ISEF Science and Engineering Competition held in Los Angeles, USA between 11-17 May. .

“It was a project that attracted a lot of attention from the musician community.”

In his statement to the AA correspondent, Akbudak said that he started playing guitar in primary school, and with the support of his family, he continued to study with his teacher at a foundation school for about 3 years.

Explaining that he resorted to the artificial intelligence method due to the “trouble of finding new melody and harmony” while writing his own compositions, Akbudak said, “The lack of classical guitar features in existing artificial intelligence and especially the lack of artificial intelligence with sufficient knowledge about the baroque period led me to do the project.” said.

The high school musician stated that he tried to represent his country in the best way possible in the international project competition and that he was happy to receive an award, and continued as follows:

“This project introduces very innovative systems in the music production process. It brings three different major innovations in the music modeling part, the music production part and how beautiful the music is. I can say that the biggest purpose of this project is to be a tool that musicians can use to find new ideas In general, it can be used in any field during music production in the entertainment industry. The main focus of my project is that by first giving a certain input to our model, we do not have to give an input from scratch. It is possible to produce.”

Stating that his studies lasted about 2 years and that he wanted to work on this field at the university, Burak Sina Akbudak said, “I especially aim to work through models in which the human voice is produced. I had the chance to participate in three fairs, it was a project that attracted the attention of the musicians. Juries are interested in the technical part.” “He also asked good questions, I have heard more than once that it is a good project.” he said.
