Italy eliminated from EURO 2024

Switzerland and Italy played a match at the European Championship, Liter.kz reports with reference to the official UEFA website.

Switzerland quickly took control of the ball and methodically shook up Italy’s defence, but it was only in the 24th minute that they created their first dangerous moment: Breel Embolo jumped into an excellent position, shot into the far top corner, but Gianluigi Donnarumma made a superb save.

Nevertheless, the Swiss advantage brought results even before the break. Ruben Vargas made a brilliant penetrating pass from the left flank, and Bologna’s Remo Freuler handled the ball well and fired home. Donnarumma caught the ball with his foot, but it still flew into the net.

Italy must have gone into the second half with a plan to quickly level the score, but instead Donnarumma produced another outstanding save to turn Fabian Rieder’s free-kick onto the post, and then Vargas burst into the box from the left and curled a perfect shot into the top corner.

Italy could have come back into the game twice: when Fabian Schär hit the post of his own goal, and also 15 minutes before the end of normal time, when Gianluca Scamacca hit the post from a few meters. But that situation would have had to be assessed for offside.

The Swiss controlled the course of the game quite calmly, created half-chances and eventually achieved a well-deserved victory. Italy resigned as European champion already in the first stage of the playoffs.
