Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (JV) has submitted a draft decision to the parliament on the approval of Braže as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
As reported, after several weeks of political consultations within the “New Unity”, Siliņa has decided to nominate diplomat Braži for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Braže, ambassador for special tasks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has held various positions in the foreign service, including being the ambassador of Latvia to several countries. Before becoming the Ambassador for Special Tasks in the summer of 2023, she was the Deputy Secretary General of NATO for Public Diplomacy since May 2020.
Braže was unofficially mentioned as the most reliable candidate for this position right after the previous minister Krišjānis Kariņš (JV) announced his resignation. The position of the Minister of Foreign Affairs became vacant after former Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš left it after the private flight scandal.
The coalition parties have conceptually expressed their support for the candidacy of diplomat Braže for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, but on April 17, Braže is still scheduled to meet with Saeima factions.
Politician of the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS), Minister of Economy Viktors Valainis emphasized that Braže is already known both as an ambassador and with her position in NATO, and the ZZS highly values her professionalism. Braže’s experience will also help Latvia fight for a place in the UN Security Council, Valainis said.
Antonina Nenasheva, deputy chairperson of the “Progressive” Saeima faction, positively assessed the finding of a candidate and said that the faction would also like to discuss with Braži the work on including manganese ore in the European Union’s sanctions against Russia.
Braže is currently non-partisan, but “Vienotība” has invited him to join the party.
