An official close to the discussion told the publication that Israel is planning retaliatory strikes that will “send a message” to Iran, but not kill. Israel’s military-political cabinet is considering two options – strikes on targets in Tehran or a cyber attack.
“Everyone agrees that Israel must respond. But the question remains when to respond and how to respond,” the source said.
US President Joe Biden has already indicated that the US military will not be involved in offensive operations in Iran.
Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has reportedly announced on Monday that Israel will respond to Iran’s missile and drone attack over the weekend, but did not specify how.
Halevi said Israel was still considering next steps, but stressed that an answer would be given.
It has already been reported that Iran attacked Israel overnight from Saturday to Sunday with hundreds of drones and missiles, most of which were intercepted by Israel and its allies.
Iran said it was a response to the April 1 attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, in which 16 people, including two Iranian generals, were killed. Tehran blames Israel for this strike.
Tehran said after the attack that retaliation against Israel was “considered complete” and warned Israel not to respond.
The international community has condemned Iran’s attack and called on all parties to exercise restraint.
