Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, stressed that Iran considers the Syrian Golan Heights an integral part of Syria.
“Iran strongly condemns the Israeli attacks on Syria, which have led to the martyrdom and injury of Syrian citizens, as well as the destruction of its infrastructure,” IRNA quoted Iravani as saying at a meeting of the UN General Assembly’s Special Political and Decolonization Committee on measures and settlement construction affecting the rights of the Palestinian people and other Arabs in the occupied territories. “As stated in relevant Security Council resolutions, Israel’s decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and sovereignty on the occupied Syrian Golan is null and void and has no international legal effects,” IRNA reported.
Regarding the presence of US occupation forces on Syrian territory, Iravani said in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres: “The Permanent Representative of Syria to the United Nations has repeatedly expressed his strong opposition to the continued illegal presence of US military forces in Syria, describing it as a clear violation of international laws and a clear disregard for national and regional sovereignty, unity and political independence of Syria.”
Irwani added: The United States must stop its illegal actions, end its illegal occupation, and fulfill its international legal obligations, including relevant Security Council resolutions, which require all member states to support and respect Syria’s national sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, which is in the interest of regional and international peace and security.
In a related context, the Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations referred to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s continued support for the Palestinian people in their struggle against the occupation and their inalienable right to self-determination through the formation of an independent Palestinian state on the entire land of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital, and said: “The deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip makes it necessary to achieve a ceasefire as a priority and immediate and comprehensive action to facilitate the reconstruction of this region.”
Iravani pointed out that during the past month, the Israeli occupation forces bombed the Gaza Strip and used advanced weapons in the most brutal and barbaric ways, killing more than ten thousand Palestinian civilians and injuring more than twenty-five thousand others. The Israeli army destroyed thousands of homes and residential buildings, in addition to protected buildings such as refugee camps, schools, hospitals and buildings housing journalists. Other vital civilian infrastructure was damaged as a result of these attacks, which constitute a clear and systematic violation of human rights, humanitarian law and international law.
“The illegal and inhumane land and sea blockade on Gaza, the world’s largest and most densely populated open-air prison, continues to negatively impact the lives of all Palestinian civilians in Gaza,” Iran’s UN ambassador continued. “The blockade on Gaza must be lifted immediately and all measures that constitute collective punishment, including restrictions on freedom of movement in the occupied territories and the destruction of homes, must be halted.”
He pointed out that the General Assembly, as the collective conscience of the international community, bears the responsibility and duty to condemn the Israeli aggression and ethnic cleansing, and should also take the necessary measures to hold Israel accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Irwani condemned the threat made by Israeli officials, the latest of whom was the so-called Minister of the Israeli Heritage, who targeted the people of Gaza using nuclear weapons, stressing that the Israeli occupation has been threatening international and regional peace for more than seven decades, and the current attacks launched by this entity against Gaza are a clear example of aggressive acts that must be investigated under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, calling on the international community to condemn the dangerous statements of the Israeli entity and to exert pressure on it to stop its nuclear weapons program.
“The defenceless Palestinian people in Gaza, who are subjected to ongoing Israeli military aggression, brutal killings, crimes and collective punishments, all of which are clear violations of international humanitarian laws, are now facing the nuclear threat of the rogue Israeli entity,” Irwani added, explaining that the use of nuclear weapons or even the mere threat of them, regardless of the circumstances or the party responsible, is not only a clear violation of international law, but also of the basic principles of the UN Charter.
