(Cairo·Seoul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Sang-hoon and journalist Yoo Han-ju = As the armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanese armed faction that supports Hamas, intensifies, the Israeli army announced on the 9th (now local) of having eliminated the head of Hezbollah’s drone unit.
Major General Daniel Hagari, the Israeli military’s chief spokesman, posted a video of the car bomb on the social media platform
Major General Hagari explained: “He conducted dozens of operations against the Israeli army using explosives and drones, and also led today’s attack on the headquarters of the Israeli Northern Army.”
However, Hezbollah denied Israel’s claims in a statement the same day, saying: “The commander (Bourji) was never the subject of an assassination attempt as claimed by the enemy,” Reuters reported.
Earlier this day, Hezbollah said: “We mobilized a number of drones to attack the command center of the enemy’s Northern Command in Safed, northern Israel,” and added: “This was retaliation for the death of Hezbollah’s senior commander, Wissam al-Tawil.”
The Israeli military also confirmed it had been attacked by a drone, but said there were no casualties and that it launched a counterattack in southern Lebanon, where the drone was launched.
Israel, which has focused on the war in the Gaza Strip to eliminate Hamas, has said it does not want to escalate the war with Hezbollah, but has launched a counterattack against Hezbollah bases in southern Lebanon every time Hezbollah has attacked.
So far, around 180 people, including around 130 Hezbollah members, have died in Lebanon, while nine soldiers and four civilians have died in Israel.
On the 2nd, a drone attack hit the Hamas headquarters on the outskirts of Beirut, the Lebanese capital, killing six people, including al-Arouri, deputy director of the Hamas political office, and raising the level of armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah increased.
In a context of imminent tension, al-Tawil, a high-ranking commander of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan unit, died in an explosion on the 8th, followed by the death of Barji, an air force unit commander , raising the possibility that border tensions between the two countries will increase further.
