The Israeli Supreme Court issued an order this Sunday temporarily suspending the investigation into the failures of the Army and the Shin Bet, the internal intelligence agency, that preceded the Hamas attacks on October 7.
“In view of the complex reality and the scope of the planned investigation, which will harm the fighting, the investigation must be suspended at this time,” Judge Canfy-Steinitz ruled today in response to the petition of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel and from the Israel Defensive Shield Forum.
“This is a brave and correct decision that will allow security forces to focus solely on defeating the enemy. We welcome the responsibility shown by the court and ask the comptroller to respect the decision“said Eliad Shraga, president of the Movement for Quality Government.
The judge explained that the confidential opinions delivered by security officials had had significant weight in this order.
The State Controller of Israel, Matanyahu Englman, announced at the end of December a broad investigation with the aim of resolving the main failures that allowed the Hamas attacks in which 1,200 people lost their lives and 251 were kidnapped after a late Israeli response.
However, the implementation of this research aroused criticism among various groupsamong them the Chief of the Army Staff, Herzi Halevi, and the Government, who considered that the first thing was to conclude the war in Gaza.
The suspension remains in place until at least July, when a court hearing is scheduled to be held and applications for interim orders heard.
