Israel struck the Houthi-controlled Hudaydah Port on the Red Sea following a drone attack on Tel Aviv.
Speaking after the airstrike on Hudaydah, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that they wanted to give a message to the Houthis, saying, “There is a fire going on in Hudaydah right now, it can be seen from the whole Middle East and the message it wants to give is very clear.”
News outlets linked to the Houthis reported that three people were killed and 80 injured in the attacks on Saturday.
On Sunday morning, Israel said it shot down a UAV launched from Yemen before it entered its airspace.
Sirens sounded in Israel’s Red Sea port of Eilat in anticipation of shrapnel falling.
Houthi official Mohammed Abdulsalam said the Israeli airstrike was carried out to dissuade the Houthis from supporting the Palestinians in Gaza, but that such a thing was not possible.
Large fires were seen breaking out in the Hodeidah Port on Saturday night. The Houthi-led government reported that Israel had struck an oil depot and a power plant near the port.
A 50-year-old died
Israel has said it has sent hundreds of drones from Yemen in recent months; this attack was its first recent response.
The reason for this was given as a drone attack harming an Israeli citizen.
Speaking on television after the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country would protect itself in every way and said the port was an entry point for Iranian weapons.
On Friday, a drone claimed to be made by Iran hit apartment buildings in Tel Aviv.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for this attack and said they would carry out more.
A 50-year-old man who had moved to Israel from Belarus was killed and eight people were injured in the attack.
An Israeli military spokesman said the drone was detected but not shot down due to “human error”; all previous Houthi drones and rockets had been shot down before they reached Tel Aviv.
Although Israel has never targeted the Houthis in Yemen before, the UK and US have carried out airstrikes.
