The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesman said that Hamas military wing chief Mohammed Deif was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip last month, Liter.kz reports, citing BBC.
Mohammed Deif, one of the Israeli military’s top targets for years, managed to escape from prison and survive at least seven assassination attempts.
“The Israel Defense Forces announces that on July 13, 2024, IDF fighter jets carried out a strike in the Khan Yunis area and after assessing the intelligence, it can be confirmed that Mohammed Deif was killed in the strike,” the statement released on August 1 said.
Hamas has not yet commented on the Israeli military’s statement.
Israel accuses Deif of planning and directing the 1996 bus bombings that killed dozens of Israelis, and of involvement in the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli soldiers in the mid-1990s.
He is believed to have been one of the masterminds of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 last year, in which some 1,200 Israelis and foreigners, mostly civilians, were killed and another 251 were taken hostage in Gaza.
Let us recall that Ismail Haniyeh, a member of the leadership of the Palestinian movement Hamas, was killed as a result of an attack on his residence in the Iranian capital Tehran.
In response to the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has promised a “harsh and painful response.”
