VAR can be suspended worldwide due to legal action.
Publika.az reports that Francisco López sued FIFA with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). He considers himself the author of VAR technology and accuses the football administration of using his idea. Although Lopez worked for 7 years to get the project recognized by RFEF and FIFA, he could not achieve it and appealed to the court.
“VAR was a project called ’21st Century Football.’ taken,” said Lopez.
For a long time, Francisco Lopez has been trying to get himself recognized as the author of the system. It has documents confirming its registration in the intellectual property register. Francisco claims that he has repeatedly offered his technology to FIFA:
“I sent them my first letter in 1997. Then I did it every year until 2007. I was in constant contact with former referee José María García Aranda, Villar’s right-hand man at FIFA and one of FIFA’s chief referees.”
The court will soon decide whether to suspend the application of VAR as a preventive measure. In addition, Francisco Lopez demands 300 million euros from RFEF and FIFA.
