In each country, the rules of conscription, the age of conscription and the duration of service are different. In Azerbaijan, the age of conscription for military service for young people is 18, the term of military service is 12 months for boys with higher education, and 18 months for those without higher education. There is also overtime military service, which has its own rules.

In Turkey, the age of conscription is 21.

Is it possible to raise the conscription age to 19 or 20 in the country? Any suggestions on this?

Aydın Mirzazade, a member of the Defense, Security and Anti-Corruption Committee of the Milli Majlis, told Bizim.media that there is no proposal in this regard yet:

“Such a proposal is not expected, because it does not exist in world practice. There is a practice of postponing conscription for certain reasons, which is also the case in Azerbaijan.”

The deputy believes that the selection of this age corresponds to the future plans of young people:

“The age of 18 was accepted because it is the puberty period for boys, on the other hand, after paying military duty to the country for a certain period of time, young people begin to implement their future plans.

In other words, they begin to create financial opportunities for their family or themselves through education, qualification, starting a family, working. According to each country’s own legislation, after the end of military service, young people can build their lives according to their plans. That’s why the draft age is 18.”
