“The virus is not pathogenic for humans. The disease can only be transmitted from pigs to pigs. Although meat with the genome of the virus is on retail sale, it is generally safe for humans,” said Agranovsky.
However, the expert noted that the virus is dangerous for pigs, it can enter the animal’s body through dirt or feed.
“Infected meat is destroyed only for the safety of the animals, because the infection is dangerous for them,” said Yuri Kovalev, director general of the National Association of Pig Breeders.
“In private farms, epidemics often occur in the summer-autumn season, when people go to the forest to collect mushrooms. A person follows the path of an infected wild boar, and then the disease in the grass remains in the boot. Then he walks with animals and brings the disease to the yard of his animals with the grass in his boot”, – the expert added.
