An irregular building collapses after a gas cylinder explodes, leaving people dead in Aracaju

An irregular building collapsed killing three people in Aracaju (SE). Fourteen people were injured.

“If anyone sees this video, send it to the fire department. This place has collapsed. For the love of God, people. Look, let’s call the fire department. Everyone has already called, everyone,” one resident said in a video recorded minutes after the explosion.

On Sunday morning (31st), a gas cylinder exploded inside a kitnet, which was located on the first floor of a building. The impact caused a collapse.

“Get the people out of here, for the love of God,” one resident demanded, while recording a video.

“I woke up to the smell of gas that was unbearable to breathe and, 10 minutes later, to that huge explosion. We felt as if our bodies and souls were left, unable to move, afraid that even my structure had been compromised.” it was truly panic. The scare was so great that we came back just like that: falling, falling, falling and dying. It was a huge scare we had,” recalls Joana Darc dos Santos, a shop assistant.

“We were on a small piece of land and only a small corner remained. Only part of the bedroom remained, the bedroom and the center of the kitchen. I said: ‘My God, hold me.’ For the love of God . Hold on to this little piece so you don’t collapse with us.”

“We were inside and, all of a sudden, we heard an explosion. It felt like the world was ending.”

Firefighters gradually released her so residents could remove what was left after the explosion. Carlos Alberto only had three minutes.

“Everything was left, right? Wardrobe, sofa, stove, refrigerator, bed, everything and some clothes that we couldn’t find everything. We had to get in and out quickly,” explains Carlos.

Since Sunday, Erasmo has been keeping vigil waiting for his daughter, who is under the rubble, to be rescued.

“How is the father’s heart at the moment?” asks the journalist.

“Party, right,” Erasmo replies.

A camp with several security teams has been set up in front of the site. Civil Protection, Military Police, rescuers and traffic officers took turns for more than 40 hours.

The firefighters avail themselves of the essential help of drug-sniffing dogs, who located the bodies. Fourteen people were injured. Two, more serious, were taken to a city hospital.

The explosion occurred at the back of a house, which appeared to be the home of a single family, but was an apartment building with 48 kitchenettes. An irregular job, according to the firefighters.

“A unit that resembles an apartment building, which should pass by the Fire Brigade, undergo analysis, approval, inspection, guaranteeing certification and regularity. So the certification is irregular and has not passed by the Fire Brigade”, underlines Fábio Cardoso, general commander of the corporation.

Firefighters warn of the risk of gas installations in inappropriate locations and irregular construction.

“We warn, we ask people to observe it. And also the tenant, someone who doesn’t just come to build. He asks that they have a minimum level of safety. Some things he can already see, like an emergency sign, a fire extinguisher, if there are adequate stairs for an escape route. At the very least you can ask the owner if he has a stick, some release, something that demonstrates that he is in order”, reinforces Maria de Sousa, operations director of the Fire Brigade.
