Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has announced his resignation. He announced this in a press conference on Wednesday (March 20). Meanwhile, Varadkar also commented that the country’s coalition government would have a better chance of re-election under another leader. But he is not resigning now. Said to step down as prime minister soon after choosing his successor. British news agency Reuters reported this news.
Varadkar’s party will announce the nomination of the new leader of Fine Gael on Thursday. And the result will be announced on April 5. Parliament will then vote on Varadkar’s successor as Prime Minister on April 9.
In 2017, Varadkar took office as Ireland’s first openly gay Prime Minister. It was then known as a staunch Catholic country.
Varadkar re-assumed the prime ministership just 15 months ago without a general election. The country is scheduled to hold general elections in March 2025.
A brief press conference was held at Government House in Dublin on Wednesday. Then Varadka said, ‘My resignation is for both personal and political reasons.’ Varadkar, 45, became emotional while speaking.
He was saying, ‘But after considering everything and self-realization I have taken this decision. I believe, under a new prime minister and a new leader, the re-election of the coalition government will go well.’
