Ireland avoids aid plunder in Tindouf

In response to a parliamentary question submitted by Matt Carthy, a member of the Irish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, about the aid his country provided to refugees in the Tindouf camps in Algeria, the Irish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it did not provide any direct aid or funding to the Tindouf camps, adding that “Ireland provides “Funds for UN humanitarian agencies, including UNHCR.”

The Irish Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained in the answer, which was signed by Sean Fleming, Minister of State in the aforementioned Ministry, and was viewed by Hespress on the website of the Irish Parliament, that “humanitarian agencies ensure the necessary flexibility to plan and direct funding in the most strategic and efficient way,” recorded in the context of her talk about her position on The Sahara issue: “The Irish government’s policies have long been based on supporting Security Council resolutions regarding the Sahara,” pointing out that Dublin has no say in the outcome of any decision related to the future of the region as long as it is taken peacefully.

In his comment on these positions expressed by Ireland, Jawad Al-Qasmi, a researcher in international law and international relations, said: “It should be noted first that Morocco considers the residents of the camps to be detained by the Polisario, for many reasons, the most important of which is the organization’s permanent rejection of any census operation.” The party of international bodies to determine the real needs of the camp residents and provide them with adequate aid, in addition to not allowing them to leave, in clear violation of the 1951 Convention on Refugees, with the aim of trading on their suffering.”

Al-Qasmi added, in a statement to the electronic newspaper Hespress, that “what the Irish government confirmed by not providing any direct funding to the Polisario camps falls within the framework of the great fear that has become raised and raised about the fate of international humanitarian aid to these camps, in light of the reports that continue about cases of trafficking in them.” In addition to exploiting this aid and diverting its direction to purchase military equipment and recruiting more children, this is what Morocco has drawn attention to on more than one occasion.”

In another context, the same researcher pointed out that “Ireland’s affirmation of its support for the UN Security Council resolutions regarding Moroccan Western Sahara, and its support for any decision that concerns the future of the region taken peacefully, remains a balanced position that does not take sides directly with any party, but it is a position that is in line with the Moroccan trend that rejects any A military escalation, in the face of his proposed autonomy project, which was welcomed by many countries and major powers as a realistic, logical and peaceful solution.”

Al-Qasmi concluded, “These positions carry clear signals to the Polisario group that states and the international community reject any military approach aimed at inflaming the situation,” referring to the Polisario’s return to what it calls “armed struggle,” in the feasibility of which states no longer believe, let alone its presence in the imagination. This separatist organization comes at a time when many countries have gone to invest in the southern regions of the Kingdom, not caring about the threats issued by the Front from time to time.

It is worth noting that the separatist leader visited this European country last February, and separatist propaganda tried to give this visit an official character, but the Irish embassy in Rabat categorically denied this, stressing that the official position of Dublin is a clear position, supporting the political settlement process led by the United Nations and does not It absolutely recognizes the “Republic of Tindouf”.

It is noteworthy that Ireland previously voted in favor of UN Security Council resolutions on the Sahara during its non-permanent membership in this UN body.
