The constitutional referendum in Armenia is planned to be held in 2027.
Publika.az Minister of Justice Grigor Minasyan told journalists about this.
The terms were initially determined during the working discussions of the constitutional reform commission.
The minister noted that detailed work still needs to be done on the complex document and public discussions will be held.
According to him, at first there were debates about making changes to the existing Constitution or adopting a new basic law, and in the end they decided on the second option.
“We discussed and reached a consensus – we need a new Constitution, not constitutional changes,” Minasyan said.
The minister added that the issue of changing the first three articles of the Constitution was not discussed at the working meetings of the commission, and the issue of removing the reference to the Declaration of Independence was not considered either.
Currently, the main focus is on the issue of a stable parliamentary majority, and the initiators of constitutional reforms want to establish this norm in the future Constitution.
The fact is that the demand for a new Constitution of Armenia was put forward by Azerbaijan. The current Constitution refers to the Declaration of Independence adopted on August 23, 1990. The declaration contains a clause on the unification of the Republic of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. Baku accuses Yerevan of territorial claims.
