Iraq, missiles against US base: “There are wounded”

The United States confirmed the news missiles launched against a base hosting US troops in Iraq. From initial information it seems there are injured and some could be Americans. “At approximately 6.30pm (Baghdad time) on January 20, multiple ballistic missiles and rockets were fired by Iranian-backed militants in western Iraq and targeted the al-Assad air base. The base’s air defense systems intercepted most of the missiles, while others fell on the base,” the General Command confirmed.

“The damage is being assessed. A number of US employees are being evaluated for head injuries. At least one member of the Iraqi military service was also injured,” is the note issued on X. Already yesterday the attacks were intensifying and a similar scenario loomed. In fact, according to the Iraqi media platform “Sabareen news”, close to Iran, it would be “the biggest attack in terms of number of missiles since the start of operations” of the so-called Islamic Resistance of Iraq, an alliance of Iraqi Shiite armed groups supported by Tehran. The same media platform yesterday afternoon reported “heaps of smoke above the Ain base al Asad”, publishing an accompanying video showing what appear to actually be the trails of some rockets in the sky.

In these hours, however, the news relaunched by Tehran of a satellite launched into orbit which, according to some Western sources, could be aimed at improving the precision of ballistic missiles. State television reported that it was a launch as part of the US space program Iranian Revolutionary Guards. The United States had previously said that Iranian satellite launches defied a United Nations Security Council resolution. For this reason they had invited Tehran not to undertake any activity involving ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
