Iraq condemns expansion of Gaza conflict after US strikes in Yemen – Xinhua

BAGHDAD, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) — Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid on Saturday condemned the widening of the conflict in the Gaza Strip following U.S.-led airstrikes against Houthi military sites in Yemen, warning that such expansion would have an impact devastating on everyone.

“We strongly condemn any attempt to expand the scope of this conflict, because it will burn everyone,” Rashid said in a televised speech at a ceremony commemorating Shiite cleric Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim, who was killed in a bomb attack in the city of Najaf in August 2003.

Rashid reiterated Iraq’s condemnation of the Israeli attacks on Gaza, which have caused suffering to the Palestinian people, especially since most of the victims are women, children and the elderly.

He urged the international community to end this conflict by adopting a more decisive position to achieve peace and guarantee the interests of the Palestinian people through the creation of an independent state.

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry on Friday condemned airstrikes carried out by the United States and the United Kingdom against Houthi military bases in Yemen. The attacks were carried out in response to recent attacks launched by the Houthis in the Red Sea against what they call “Israel-linked ships”.

The ministry called the attacks “an aggression against Yemen and its sovereignty.” END
